7 Great movies to watch on Netflix this weekend

The best movies to watch on Netflix this weekend

Netflix has hundreds of movies available to stream, and it can get a little overwhelming figuring out what to watch. That's why Techreport rounds up a list of great films  to watch on Netflix each weekend.

There are numerous period pieces available to stream on the site, but "The Duchess" is worth a watch for its gorgeous costumes and slyly feminist message, in addition to star Keira Knightley's talented performance.

For something a little darker, horror movies like "Girl on the Third Floor" and "It Comes at Night" are also available to stream.

Here are seven great movies you can watch on Netflix this weekend.

"Girl on the Third Floor" is a smart take on the haunted house trope.

Dark Sky Films

Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 79%

Audience score: 32%

Fans of haunted house movies and TV shows like "The Haunting of Hill House" won't want to miss this gory, creepy film that cleverly redefines the well-known narrative.

It combines suspense and genuine terror along with some pretty graphic gore and will have you on the edge of your seat for most of the runtime.

While "Girl on the Third Floor" isn't the most original horror film on Netflix, it adds new life to an existing trope while also serving some pretty scary moments.

"Kill Bill Vol. 2" is the sequel to the first "Kill Bill" movie, and packs just as much of a punch.

Miramax

Netflix description: "The Bride has three left on her rampage list: Budd, Elle Driver, and Bill himself. But when she arrives at Bill's house, she's in for a surprise."

Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 84% (certified fresh)

Audience score: 89%

In contrast to "Kill Bill Vol. 1," which was focused more on action sequences than plot, the sequel to Quentin Tarantino's martial-arts masterpiece adds a bit more to the narrative of the Bride than its predecessor.

Uma Thurman stuns yet again as Beatrix Kiddo/the Bride, and while it's still an action-heavy film, the show-stopping climax and conclusion make it well worth a watch, especially if vengeance is your thing.

"It Comes at Night" focuses on a family trying to survive an epidemic.

A24

Netflix description: "As danger stalks the world outside his isolated home, an overprotective father faces a tough decision when another family shows up seeking help."

Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 87% (certified fresh)

Audience score: 44%

Even though "It Comes At Night" doesn't include that much gore or violence, it's still a deeply terrifying movie that examines how trust (or a lack thereof) can prove fatal in the midst of a deadly outbreak.

Focusing on a family and their struggle to survive, the movie proves that sometimes, it's what's not shown onscreen that can be the scariest.

The musician Prince stars in "Purple Rain."

Warner Bros.

Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 69%

Audience score: 78%

Look, no one's going to say that "Purple Rain" is a perfect movie — there are too many cheesy parts and corny pick-up lines for that. But Prince's performance alone is worth watching.

In this film, the iconic artist plays a version of himself known only as "The Kid." He dances, sings, and breaks hearts all over town, while also performing some of his most iconic songs.

"The Duchess" gives Keira Knightley a chance to shine.

Paramount Vantage

Netflix description: "To compensate for her unhappy marriage, young duchess Georgiana Spencer begins a scandalous affair with politician Charles Grey."

Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 62%

Audience score: 67%

If you're looking for an engaging and slyly feminist period piece, "The Duchess" is for you. Keira Knightley, queen of corsets and period dramas, shines in this movie about a relatively-obscure noblewoman who was years ahead of her time.

The costumes and scenery are gorgeous, too, and while it won't offer much in terms of plot, "The Duchess" is still worth a watch this weekend.

"Amy" paints a nuanced portrait of the late singer.

Netflix description: "Rare home videos and interviews with Amy Winehouse's winner circle offer an intimate look at her journey from charismatic teen to troubled star."

Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 95% (certified fresh)

Audience score: 87%

Amy Winehouse was one of the most talented singers of our time, and this documentary does her troubled life and legacy justice.

It's not always an easy movie to watch — the parts about Amy's struggle with substance abuse and eating disorders are particularly heartbreaking — but overall, it paints a nuanced and memorable portrait of an artist who really was gone too soon.

It's impossible not to love "Julie & Julia."

Columbia Pictures

Netflix description: "In this heartwarming tale, Julie Powell decides to spice up her uneventful life by cooking all 524 recipes outlined in Julia Child's classic cookbook."

Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 77% (certified fresh)

Audience score: 70%

"Julie & Julia" is a comforting movie that's the cinematic equivalent of a bowl of chicken soup.

Starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, the movie tenderly recounts the life of the famous chef while also exploring her impact decades later. Plus, all of the food looks really, really good and might even inspire you to try your hand at some of Child's iconic recipes.
